The CAPI GDIY 508 Rev B is a high end printed circuit board used specifically for the backplane in our 508 series of modular metalwork. This backplane is one of the most flexible in the industry and includes many unique options. With some inspiration from Volker Mayer's fine work on the 511 backplane, I incorporated many of those same features along with some specifically geared at a console type build. This backplane is designed to 8 channels in width, which is consistent with a vintage API recording console bucket.

The 508 backplane can be built with the standard VPR 15-pin card edge connectors or 51x style which uses the 18-pin card edge connectors. Any combination of both can also be used.

All of the module input and output connections can be made using either .1" Molex or .156" Molex headers. This gives the builder the flexibility to use whatever you are most comfortable with. There is a small legend on the rear of the backplane which shows the input and output abbreviations. Example: MS-O = Module Slot Output. The middle pin of the in and out 3-pin headers is the cable's shield. "Lo" is the negative or "-" connection and "Hi" is the positive or "+" connection.

Each slot has an optional position for a Plug-In Relay PCB. The main idea behind this is console related. Basically, the thought is to bring a tape return or other line signal to the header labeled "ALT-I" or Alternate Relay Input. The module's output is also routed to this relay. The output of the relay (header labeled R-O) can then be routed to the line input of the console channel. This will give you the ability to switch between mic and line, if you have a mic pre in this particular slot of the 508 backplane. This relay business is all optional and can be completely ignored if using the backplane in a standard 500 series type application. The 2-pin headers near the top of the backplane with the labels "24V COM" and "+24V" are for the relay control circuit. The two 4-pin headers near the bottom labeled "Relay Control" are also of course for this relay business.

This backplane is very well shielded with a full copper flood on each of its sides. These copper flood planes are fully isolated and make no connection to each other on this backplane. The module side copper plane is the Chassis plane which connects to pin #1 on all of the module slots. You will also find two plated thru holes near the bottom of the PCB that connect to this Chassis copper plane. The connector side copper plane is the PSU/Audio Ground plane. This copper plane is connected to pins #5 and #13 of each module slot. There is a single plated thru hole near the bottom middle of the backplane that is tied directly to the Ground plane. Both Chassis and Ground planes are separate in the 7-pin headers for independent connections back to the PSU. In most installations, Chassis and Ground will not connect at the backplane or modules. The first and only time they should connect is at the star ground point in the PSU enclosure. Each copper plane has been strategically stopped to not make additional (or any) connection to the metalwork and mounting screws.

With the introduction of the Rev B version of this backplane, all input shield "options" have been removed. All of these shield connections now go directly to the Chassis ground plane. To help understand this more, I highly recommend reading the Rane Notes on Grounding and Shielding Audio Devices.

The outputs from the relay PCB and the module slot itself have their shield connections made to the Chassis plane. This is the most common and safest way to handle this connection since it could not be fully user selectable. More often than not, the output cable's shield will float and make no connection to any ground plane at the output of a 500 series module. Please be advised, I am not recommending to always do this. Each installation will be different. Please use your own best judgment and refer to the Rane Notes if needed.

Access to the optional unbalanced output available on pin #3 can be found for each module using a .1" header labeled "U-O". These headers are near the top on the connector side of the backplane. This can lead to many exciting console type applications in the future. This pin #3 connection is fully VPR and 51x compliant.

Access to the pin #6 DC-Link between adjacent module slots is also available. With the Rev B release, the DC-link options are now handled with miniature slide switches from E-Switch. With all of these connections made on a backplane, you will essentially create an end to end DC Bus that can be used with a rack of Missing Link Modules as well as our soon to be released VI522, which is a stereo volume indication module. This pin #6 connection is fully VPR and 51x compliant.

Access to the optional unbalanced input available on pin #9 can be found for each module using a .1" header labeled "U-I". These headers are near the middle on the connector side of the backplane. The VI522 stereo volume indication module makes good use of this connection. The VI522 has two separate high impedance inputs that can drive each channel's VU meter. One is balanced (+4dB = 0VU) at the normal module inputs (pin #8 & #10) and the other is unbalanced at pin #9 (-2dB = 0VU). This will be fed from the consoles input channel where the signal is taken from just before a 1:2 output transformer. For the VI522, the selection on which signal is coupled to the VU meter is done with a relay that gets its control signal from the pin #6 connection. With proper setup on this backplane, one can easily toggle a large bank of VU meters between input channel, tape return or even subgroup. This pin #9 connection is fully VPR and 51x compliant.

This backplane is very robust and measures 1/8" (3.18mm) in thickness. The width is 11.979" (304.27mm) and the height is 5" (127mm). It has been carefully engineered to work perfectly with our modular console metalwork parts.
