So I would say the bt50 was really my first test as a DIYer. Of the CAPI builds I have done (VP312, VP28) the bt50 was the hardest and most time consuming. However, just take your time and be meticulous and it will turn out just fine. The only issue I had was the 6 deck Grayhill switches. Wow are they tricky to get into the PCB. It wasn't too bad, but be patient here. The last thing you want to do is bend one of those legs. My real downfall was not paying attention to the explicit instructions to let the switches cool before soldering anymore. In other words, do a leg on one switch, move to another and so on. I overheated one of my Grayhills (beautiful switches they are) and alas that one is a bit hard to turn at one end of the spectrum. It's loosened up over time, though.
The sound of this unit is fantastic. It could be my favorite EQ. It gets the peaking Q just right. Some EQs are surgical and too pointed, some are so gentle you can't shape with them. This seems right in the middle to me. You can shape drums with them, or gently bring some air to an acoustic guitar. I would say it errs every so slightly to the pointed side rather than gentle, but basically rides the fence and sounds great on anything. I would like to have a rack of 8 to 16 of these some day for tracking and mixing. Just a great EQ that marries utility/function and tone in a great way.
Make sure to be patient with the build! Enjoy!
