Acoustic Guitar and Vocal Preamp Comparison Clips Featuring Charli Robertson and Colt Capperrune

    On April 7th of 2018, my friends and I invaded Sound Emporium Studio B here in Nashville to do a little recording. The goal was to capture preamp comparison clips so folks could hear the difference between the legacy kit preamps and the new CAPI-Platinum line. I reached out to vocalist Charli Robertson from the bluegrass band Flatt Lonesome. Charli said she'd love to be a part of the session. I sent her a handful of songs written by my good friend John Kennedy and she picked Lonely Every Time. From that point things fell into place pretty easily with Colt Capperrune lending has guitar playing skills, Gena Johnson engineering and video capture by Troy Jackson.
    The main goal was the 8 pass preamp comparisons. We had 2 mics on Charli. We also had 2 mics on Colt playing John's Martin. The tracks are kept separate in the ProTools session file so one can mix and tweak to their liking. It was not a 100% scientific comparison as they are 8 different takes. Such is life. I think its still enough to get a feel for the different preamps. No equalizers or dynamics processors were used during the recording. None were used on the mixes for the 8 pass video either.

    While we were setup, I thought it would be great fun to pick our favorite preamps for Charli's vocal and our favorite for acoustic guitar. We then proceeded to get a full song captured in music video style. I am so glad we did as it turned out amazing. Gena used a real EMT plate for verb and a few small EQ and compression tricks while mixing, like a vintage Fairchild 670 across the bus. We mixed thru the SumBus with VP28-Pts on the backend. I sent the final mix off to Pete Lyman for some mastering touches. A great singer singing a great song. There's nothing better than that! Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
