The VP25 seems to be the red headed stepchild of the CAPI preamp range but it's quickly become one of my favorite pres of all time (on drums). Comparing it to a VP26, it's less pointy and overall fatter and bigger sounding, especially when pushing the input and attenuating the output. Dare I say it's almost like an API and a Neve had a lovechild. The lows are (not subtly) extended due to the larger output transformer and this can really enhance the "gut punch" from a microphone's proximity effect on drums. Toms sound thunderous through a VP25. Snare drums sound wide and have a beautiful woody punch. For inside kick, I generally prefer the pointiness and focus of the VP26 for a nice and present definition, but then combined with an outside mic going through a VP25 for the low end rumble. Just delicious!
Side-note that swapping out the Red Dots in all my VP25's with CA-0252's recently really opened up and smoothed out the highs and added some extra creaminess to the lows while the mids are still as punchy as we expect from an API-style pre. Overall smoother and less gritty than Red Dots. Most notably, hi-hat and cymbal bleed became far less offensive with the 0252's. I definitely recommend them!
